- Standing Square In The Centre Of The Market Town Of
thame - the spread eagle hotel was once a private
house. incorporating part of the original 16th
century building / the red brick facade was added
in 1715 and more recently the brideshead wing -which
includes in its structure the original garden wall.
as a busy coaching inn in the 19th century - the
hotel really found fame in the 1920s under the
tenure of its eccentric proprietor john fothergill
who put both it and thame on the map. Fothergill
Introduced haute cuisine to the provinces -
chronicling his experiences in the best-selling book
-an innkeepers diary. Now caringly restored the
hotel provides comfortable accomodation / extensive
conference/banqueting facilites / a large car park
and a high standard of cuisine in the fothergills
restaurant.
