Hotel Description
|
- Situated in the scenic Chattahoochee National Forest, Helen is Georgia's alpine village. Famous for its annual Oktoberfest from September to November, Helen offers a wide variety of activities for the entire family. In the summer join the many families "tubing the hooch" (the Chattachoochee River) that runs through town, or just stroll the downtown cobblestone alleyways and discover unique gift shops. For the adventure seeker there is white water rafting, hiking in the National Forest and Unicoi State Park, horseback riding, and gold panning. Gold was first discovered in the surrounding mountains in 1828 and the Nation's first gold rush drew thousands to the area to make their fortunes. You can still find flakes in the creeks surrounding Helen. In the fall the leaves turn brilliant colors of orange, yellow, purple and red as the night air becomes cool and crisp. Join the fun at the nearby Festhalle and dance to the German oompah bands with revelers in authentic German dress. Helen is home to many fine German and American restaurants, unique bavarian and scandanavian import shops as well as factory outlet shops. The Remember When Theatre is open year round and features Mark Pitt's tribute to Elvis every Saturday night. During the winter a light dusting of snow adds to the charm of the picture postcard village which is alight with thousands of white lights. In Helen we call them the "Alpenlights". Winter is a magical time in Helen. To the west, the gold mining town of Dahlonega was an important center of activity in the 1800's. A US mint was built there and is now home to a historical gold museum. You can still tour the gold mines in the area. During October, Dahlonega hosts the Gold Rush days on the third weekend. The town of Hiawassee to the north of Helen, hosts the Georgia Mountain Fair every August and is a favorite must see for families. The fair features famous country and bluegrass groups as well as a midway and crafts / craftmaking. At the Best W
